Growing in plains and scrubland, the fruit from this palm species is edible and used to make and jelly. The sap is tapped and drunk fresh or fermented into toddy. The fresh sap is boiled to make palm jaggery in West Bengal and Bangladesh.
It has a lot of similar characteristics with True Date Palm (Phoenix dactylifera). It has a solitary robust trunk, with interesting diamond pattern created by leaf scars. Trunk is swollen at the base, about 13-18 inches in diameter.
